With the Christmas season upon us it seems a good time to ponder if we can put up that Christmas tree? Is there a difference in lighting the tree or lighting a pumpkin? Ohhh…. But you say Christmas is celebrating Jesus’ birthday and to Christians that may be so but Wiccans are celebrating the goddess giving birth to the god as the reborn sun. In fact, most things that we’ve become so accustomed to as Christmas decorations have little to no association to Christ at all. Evergreen garland, wreaths and even mistletoe have pagan ancestry. Yet in most every Christian home you’ll find the scent of evergreen fills the air.
Some will challenge your tree with Jeremiah 10:3-4 “For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter,” which could almost seems a description of the Christmas tree. However as we read on we find the scripture is actually speaking about man-made idols. So… before you start un-decorating your tree, take a moment and consider if the tree is an idol to you?
During my Wiccan years I use to adorn my Yule tree with suns, moons, stars, fairies and elves. Star garland draped its branches and atop the tree… a star with crescent moons carved in it. I still put up the tree… only now my tree has made the conversion along with me. I’ve replaced the old decorations with the nativity, angels, crosses and Jesus! Ribbons now drape its branches and the star on the top is moonless. The evergreen boughs add a nice touch of warmth and candles still light my living room but even they… have made the transformation. While a festive house is cheery…. none of this comes close to the joy of celebrating Jesus’ 365 days a year. The decorations shine for a short season but the light of Jesus needs no branches to bear His light.
