Many teens and young adults will peel off their Halloween costumes and head to the movies tonight to be frightened out of their wits with this year’s horror flick. Hasbro is sure to see an increase in sales as the thrill seekers come home and attempt their own spirit board communication. Interestingly the movie trailer shows typical young teens dabbling in spiritualism, clueless of what they are about to release in their midst. Sound familiar? How many of us have done the same back in our youth? Friends gathered around the Ouija board in hopes to make contact with someone or rather something from beyond. While most experienced the planchette’s movement from nervous hands or another’s prank, there are those who lay claim to have succeeded in their endeavor only to regret having opened the doorway in the weeks or months to come.
The board itself is a piece of compressed wood with a plastic planchette and is sold at toy stores and occult supply stores alike. While the board isn’t per say dangerous, attempting to use it as a tool for spirit communication is. The Ouija board can become a vehicle that invites malevolent spirits to enter into your home and if you’re not careful… you. Surprisingly, when I first studied witchcraft we were cautioned against using such devices. There is a real threat of uninvited possession through the use of these boards.
Shortly after coming back to Jesus, I was called to a home of a woman who lived in fear of the Ouija board she kept in a living room closet. She shared how the door would always be found ajar and sensed a presence that kept her from relaxing in her own living room. Yet, as fearful as she was to have it, she was petrified to get rid of it. In fact, years before she had disposed of her first board but it seemed she was plagued with catastrophes afterward and resorted to repurchase the board that now haunted her closet. My friend Bo had gone with me and after spending time praying with her, we walked out with the Ouija board in hand thus releasing the bondage of fear that had oppressed her all these years.
Hopefully the thrill seekers tonight will learn one thing from the movie… engaging in spirit communication can prove to be potentially dangerous. Unfortunately, some will crave the sensation of an adrenaline rush brought on by the suspense in the theatre and relinquished once the movie ends along with the reality that you’re safe. Not so in the real life scenario of a malicious spirit that doesn’t leave when the lights come on. Bottom lines… why consult the dead and risk your well-being for answers only a Living God can tell?
“And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?” Isaiah 8:19
