I’m not one who looks forward to any type of fundraising in fact, I was a bit hesitant when my marketing manager suggested Kickstarter to bring the book to print. At the same time I knew that he had been my sole supporter and being on unemployment couldn’t continue to contribute as he had been doing. I reluctantly and prayerfully agreed knowing Kickstarter was all or nothing, and only by God’s willingness would it succeed. Kickstart Taken From The Night was off to a good start with $400 in the first two days however it would be the eleventh hour before the project was successfully funded. During that time I was blessed to see the generosity of those with giving hearts that supported the project. It truly amazed me that even during the hard times in which we live, our goal was met which will enable the next steps in the publishing of the book. Now is the rewarding part for me as I gather the Kickstarter rewards to send to our supporters. I honestly love giving! With today being Thanksgiving, I’d like to take a moment to say a special Thank You to all who pledged because you sincerely are a part in making this book a reality. I’m thankful God has blessed me through your abundant giving. For those who weren’t able to give funds but have faithfully prayed I am also grateful as I know the power in prayer! I pray He will bestow his blessings of goodness and mercy upon each of you...
My home would make a perfect candidate for “Extreme Makeover” (Ty Pennington, are you out there) and so I didn’t hesitate to respond to a contractor’s ad in the newspaper for a FHA backed home improvement loan. With my prior estimates in hand, I met with the sales rep. He was a family man sharing his heartwarming tale of his daughter’s upcoming wedding. Obviously attempting to build trust and likability I could certainly relate to his delight in his daughter. With small talk out of the way, it was time to get down to business. He measured, scribbled on his pad and came up with his calculated cost which was triple my lowest bid. “That’s way too much!” I was shocked but so was he when I explained it exceed our other bids times three! Then came the manipulation as he explained the extra’s his job included, extras that were most likely considered standard for the job. He said, “My work will save you money on your energy bill.” I made my own mental note (the job in itself will save on energy regardless who did the work) Since I wasn’t sold to his superior product he went on to allure me with money. $50,000 would make my house a charm, $20K of which would be for my pocket! Besides that he’d get me that loan with 3% less interest rate then my current mortgage! Sounds wonderful, why wouldn’t I jump at the offer? A simple retirement sounds good to me but paying a loan back when I’m 80 years old isn’t exactly enticing! Then the pressure was on, “Just sign here… trust me on this. Don’t worry about what’s written on this legal document its only purpose is to get you approved.” When I didn’t sign the document, the intimidation began. “Well if you don’t want a beautiful house with money to boot, that’s up to you. I don’t know why anyone would turn such a deal down!” After all he was only there trying to help me. Need I say we went our separate ways, no deal, no signed document and no $50,000 loan to pay off in my senior years!
Later that evening God spoke to me, ‘It pays to be kingdom minded.” It dawned on me that had I been motivated by the carnal mind I likely would’ve fallen prey to the temptation to take more money than I ever needed and still be working to pay off the loan at 80! Not only robbing my joy but also my time that could be spent advancing the kingdom. The Lord revealed the similarity in the spiritual world. The enemy uses manipulation to try and convince you he’s got something better. Next he attempts to entice you with carnal things and if he doesn’t succeed there, he’ll attempt to intimate you. That’s why it’s so important to concern oneself not with worldly things but the things of God. Truth is, I don’t need to worry myself over such temporal things. This house will pass away but you see, my Dad is making me a mansion in a place that is eternal. All the earthly wealth would not be enough to build the house that’s being prepared for me. The next time that old familiar tempter shows up, all we need to say is "Move that bus!" Cuz Dad’s working on an extreme makeover and as soon as the enemy moves out the way…we’ll see the city of our God!
