We could quickly go from a country of abundance to a starving nation in just a day’s time. How many would be homeless and hungry? Would there be room in the bushes for those in search of fig leaves… the new and unexpected fashion trend. Even more bizarre… would we find hungry drivers in Porsches and Lamborghinis without a crumb to eat? Or perhaps women adorned in diamonds and yet shoeless? The scenarios are innumerable.
What if… you were annoyed at your spouse and went to bed on your anger? Or perhaps got tired of your whining kid and tucked them in bed without thanking God for that precious little one. The heart break would be overwhelming as you awoke to an eerie silence and discovered you were all alone…
How many would get mad at God for taking away the things that you thought were rightfully yours? Imagine the fist shaking towards heaven and the profanity hurled in disrespect as if God owed you one. Or would this be the wake-up call that sent you falling to your knees and crying for mercy? When the next morning came, would you awaken to more than you did the day before because of a grateful heart and having realized that nothing is owed to you… rather every good gift is generously bestowed upon you?
We can thank God that He doesn’t take back what He has graciously given despite our short-comings. His blessings overflow out of His love for mankind and not because we could ever be righteous enough to receive them on our own. Yet, even beyond that he does not leave us or forsake us but continues to bless us… even in the midst of our unthankfulness.
